Inlivian

Inlivian (formerly Charlotte Housing Authority) is probably Charlotte’s largest housing provider for low income individuals and families.

Once you have a steady income, you feel comfortable that you don’t have a substance abuse or mental illness problem and have a little money saved up for a down payment, they are your best bet to put a permanent roof over your head. Their website does a good job of explaining the sign-up process on this webpage. Here’s a little extra info that might help you access all that they have to offer.

  • The Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) is currently closed at Inlivian due to high demand. In our opinion, it’s unlikely to re-open any time soon. But that does not mean that your dreams of finding housing are over. They offer other alternatives that you need to discuss with them
  • Like most other resources in Charlotte, Inlivian experiences heavy demand. They offer open, in-person access at their office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 ~ noon and 2p~4p. Go there to sign-up or to follow-up on a sign-up you’ve done on line. Nothing beats face-to-face discussions when there’s something this important
  • There are apartments with a pretty short wait list. For example, First Ward Place apartments only have a one month waitlist as of the time we’re writing this. (Sept. ’24)
  • Inlivian has an internal program called CORE that is available to all their customers. CORE is a group of trained social workers that can help with family, life and job problems and changes. They will do whatever they can to help you stay stable, employed and remain in your apartment.
