HUG Charlotte (Hearts United for Good) distributes food once-a-week to needy families in Charlotte through their drive-thru at 2920 N. Tryon Street.
Here’s their loading dock which you can spot from the street. If you drive by HUG today you’ll see they have a carport-like device here for food pick-up drive-thru’s. The drive-thru is open every Wednesday evening from 5:30 ~ 7:00p.
HUG gets food supplied via 2nd Harvest and then prepares prepackaged food bags to handout to needy people once a week on Wednesday evenings. Each bag is sized to help tide a family over until their next paycheck. At the beginning of the year they were handing out about 60 bags/week. Now they are doing over 200/week. On request, they will even add pet food to the bag they hand out. If you need diapers for a baby or adult in your family, they can add those too. They are a no-barriers resource. The neighbor receiving food need not be registered in the county’s homeless database. They maintain their own database with a minimal amount of information. Each recipient is asked to fill out the form below on their first visit.
But wait… that’s not all HUG does. In their back room they have the equivalent of a thrift store. There’s no guarantee what you’ll find there. But people have been known to find things like tents, carseats, sleeping bags and bikes there. They also have some clothing but that’s sent on to a variety of smaller charities for distribution. “Shopping” in this area is by appointment only. Call 704-626-5980 to set up a time to drop by.
In addition to the above, HUG is involved in many other areas. Click here to See their programs focus page
