The Smith Family BHUC in Charlotte is really the go-to place for anyone in a mental health crisis. BHUC stands for Behavioral Health Urgent Care. They are open 24/7/365 because a mental health crisis can appear at any time. In addition to Mental Health, they also handle short-term detox. They are officially not an in-patient service. Patients can stay there up to 23 hours. And there are times when they ask patients to leave for an hour and return so that they can restart the 23 hour clock for them. They rarely turn anyone away and the patient does not need ID’s or insurance coverage. After treatment, they will transport the patient to the patient’s housing or housing found during their stay.
During the patient stay, licensed clinicians, and qualified professionals will provide immediate evaluation and access to acute mental health, developmental disability and/or substance abuse services. During the stay, they will even wash and dry the patient’s clothes.
They are located at 616 Colonnade Dr which is just off Monroe Rd next to the Doral Apartments. When you pull up, this is their building with the emergency entrance on the side.
You can reach them at 704.273.3942. Their webpage is https://www.stevesmithfamilyfdn.org/bhuc.
