Hope Haven is exactly as named. It’s a center for hope for brighter future and haven for those recovering from substance abuse. Their clients are typically fed from detox centers like Anuvia and the McLeod Center. Their continuum of care is so
good that they actually pick clients up from detox and bring them right to facility on North Tryon. Their primary criterion for entry is that the client must have a substance abuse diagnosis in the last 12 months. But you do not have to be transported directly from detox to Hope Haven. But you do have to have that substance abuse diagnosis and a willingness to change your life. In the latter part of your stay, Hope Haven will connect you with a housing case manager to help you find permanent housing.
In addition to their regular work, they cooperate with Mecklenburg’s Recovery Court. People in that program can work with Hope Haven and a special court to recover from their addiction and have drug charges expunged from their records.
Naturally, they have some rules for clients relating to addictive substances on campus, curfews, and a requirement to gain some sort of employment (with assistance from Hope Haven) as clients progress past their fourth month. That helps the client pay the modest fee required after the first four months. The program is free for the first four months. Clients typically live on campus for 6 to 24 months. Hope Haven has a client assistance program to help clients find and keep jobs. One of the things that sets Hope Haven apart is their in-house job experience program. They have an in-house commercial business where residents can work and learn day-to-day job routines and awareness. This makes them more valuable and competitive in the job market when they graduate from the program.
Another asset of Hope Haven is the campus they’ve created. Beyond the façade shown above lies a large campus with acres of hotel-style housing, conference/classrooms and feel-good recovery programs like this greenhouse.
Hope Haven is located at 3815 North Tryon Street. It’s on the corner of Tryon and W. Craighead Road. You can get there on the #11 bus from downtown. It runs every 30 minutes. It’s always best to call them first at 704-372-8809. The admission process can take from a few days to a week because of the paperwork required by the state.
